The Stabbing

» Release (2010, UK)

Release - Garry Summers as Martn and Daniel Brocklebank as Fr Jack Gillie

The opening scene of this movie has two naked men entwined in a prison bed, being woken by an early morning siren. Rouse! Rouse! One jumps up, hurriedly gets dressed in his Prison Officer uniform, and lets himself out of the cell. I think that it was at that point that the film lost me. Perhaps the officer’s supervisor, a colleague – someone – would have noticed that he’d gone missing for the entire night-shift… No? (more…)

» Dog Pound (2010, Canada / France)

Dog Pound - Butch (Adam Butcher) and Frank (Dewshane Williams) at the forefront of the riot

A trans-Atlantic Scum, this is…  based on that acclaimed British movie from 1979, and every bit as bleak. (more…)

» Broken Bars (1995, USA)

Broken Bars - Benjamin Kobby / Maccabee as Nick Slater and Don Gibb as Mr Jake

At the intersection of movies about undercover cops in prison [eg Behind Prison Gates (1939), White Heat (1949), Death Warrant (1990), Club Fed (1990), Half Past Dead (2002)], and action movies starring blokes with ponytails (eg just about anything with Steven Seagal) is this number. It might not be as far-fetched as some of those others, but that doesn’t mean it’s good. (more…)

» Lockdown (2000, USA)

Lockdown - Richard T Jones as Avery Montgomery

Lockdown is a prison movie for traditionalists – murders, stabbings, drug use, drug deals, racial tension, rapes, crooked guards… and in the middle of it all, a good, innocent man struggling to survive. (more…)

» Pros & Cons (1999, USA)

Pros & Cons - Larry Miller as Ben Babbitt, acting tough and being treated as 'royalty'

It might not be the best recommendation to say that this wasn’t anywhere near as bad as I had expected. One review had it marked down as ‘hideous’ and another* concluded that it was so beset with problems that it ‘should stay in lock-up, with no eligibility for parole.’ And it’s true; the ending is an absolute shocker, and the 20-second Jerry Seinfeld-Paul Reiser cameo is terrible. But the rest of the film is on a par with lots of other pretty average prison comedies – amongst them Stir Crazy (1980), with which this shares quite a lot. Not the rodeo, thankfully. (more…)

» Sullivan’s Travels (1941, USA)

Sullivan's Travels - a barechested Joel McCrea as John L Sullivan and Al Bridge (right) as gang boss Jake 'The Mister'

When Preston Sturges’ Sullivan’s Travels was first released, the US Government’s Office of Censorship, not wishing to hand any propagandist advantage to its World War II enemies, declined to approve it for international release on the basis of its “long sequence showing life in a prison chain gang which is most objectionable because of the brutality and inhumanity with which the prisoners are treated.” That ‘long sequence’ runs to just 12 minutes, and in terms of depictions of chain gangs, is well down the brutality scale. What’s more, it’s quite possible that more damaging to the high moral ground occupied by the US was Sturges’ satirical treatment of the Hollywood culture. (more…)

» Celda 211 / Cell 211 (2009, Spain)

Celda 211 - Alberto Ammann as Juan Oliver and Luis Tosar as Malamadre

With all the fuss about 2009’s Un Prophète being a prison movie masterpiece – if not a masterpiece in any genre – this less celebrated Spanish prison film may have been overlooked. It might not be in the same class – it’s certainly no masterpiece – but there’s an awful lot to like. (more…)

» Unshackled (2000, USA)

Unshackled - James Black as Marcus 'Doc' Odomes and Burgess Jenkins as Harold Miller

Why is it that when someone writes an autobiography we allow them to reflect glowingly on their contribution to the world, and yet when they write and produce a movie of that very same life it smacks of tacky self-indulgence and bald self-promotion? Harold Morris certainly doesn’t know the answer. (more…)

» Penitentiary (1938, USA)

Penitentiary - Warden Tom Mathews (Walter Connolly) and William Jordan (John Howard)

This remake of The Criminal Code (1931) and precursor to Convicted (1950) is a solid story, well told… notwithstanding that if John Howard’s performance as the young prisoner William Jordan were any more wooden, it would be a tree. (more…)

» Doing Hard Time (2004, USA)

Doing Hard Time - Lt Elaine lodeg (Patrice Fisher) confronts a naked Eddie Mathematic (Sticky Fingaz) in the showers. It could have been worse. I could have shown you the next bit where she slaps him on the backside.

This hints at being a straightforward revenge story: grieving father seeks to avenge the death of his son. It starts with a couple of biblical references about vengeance and man being called upon to shed the blood of those who shed blood. Curiously, it then introduces a little-known footnote to Exodus 21: 23-24 (“a life for a life, an eye for an eye..”) along the lines of ‘if your son is shot through the eye, shoot the shooter through the eye’; you are not merely called upon to avenge the death, apparently, but to avenge the death using exactly the same method. In jail, that can add considerably to the degree of difficulty. (more…)
